Is It Normal To Have Blood-tinged Mucus After Using Ex-Lax And A Dulcolax Suppository For Constipation?

I have been constipated for about a week. I ate 2 exlax chocolate pieces yesterday and nothing so this morning when I woke up I used a dulcolax suppository. I had a med sized bowel movement but kept feeling the urge to go several times after. I strained for quite a while and some blood tinged mucous came out. This has happened twice more later in the day. Is this normal?

Hello,

Yes, you can get mild blood-tinged mucus once or twice. That's normal after taking a laxative and suppository for constipation. Feeling “incomplete” after a BM, especially after using a suppository and cramping or urgency for a few hours after laxatives. are normal symptoms that you may experience. However, it is not normal to feel constipated repeatedly and need laxatives frequently.

When you get mucus with blood, even without straining associated with abdominal pain, fever, or unintentional weight loss, you need to get clinically examined by a GP. You are advised to get evaluated by a GP if you have constant symptoms to rule out hemorrhoids, fissures, or, in rare cases, inflammation in the colon.

Take adequate water; avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Taking a sitz bath will give relief. Eat soft, fibrous foods like oatmeal, prunes, and warm cooked veggies for better bowel movement.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
