Is It Normal To Have Severe Pain After Having Surgery Due To Breaking Of Humerus Bone?

Hi, My 10 year old broke his humerous bone and had surgery yesterday to put pins in his arm. He is taking pain medication around the clock but is still in so much pain. Is this normal.? I called the surgeons office and spoke to his nurse and she said that it was. But he is crying and in so much pain. What should I do?
