Is It Normal To Pass Gas From The Orifice Left After Draining Anal Abscess?

I developed an anal abscess and my surgeon drained it. About a month later he performed surgery and put in a seton. After about two weeks I started to pass gas through the orifice left when he drained the abscess. Its painful and it worries that that somehow they surgery did not work. Is it normal to pass gas this way?

I am Dr Fahim, General Surgeon and I will be addressing your health concern
I have gone through your question and understood your concerns. As evident from your question, to start with it was a Perianal abscess which was drained. Later on another operation ie draining and seton insertion, which is done for Fistula in Ano. Fistula in Ano, formation is common after perianal abscess. It appears that your fistula was inadequately treated that’s why the tract persists, resulting in passage of gas from the anus/rectum through this fistulous opening.
You need to undergo some investigations like fistulogram and MRI Perineum to know about the tract of fistula followed by planning for the operation which can be fistulotomy or fistulectomy. Nowadays endoscopic treatment is also available.

Wishing you all the best and rapid recovery.

I hope my answer will help you. Do rate my answer if you like it.
