Is It Safe To Apply Silvadene Cream For Diaper Rash On Newborn Baby?

My grandson has a severe diaper rash and we have tried everything. His doctor prescribed silvadene cream. When my daughter went to pick up the prescription the pharmacist expressed great concern about her using it on a 2 week old baby. Is it safe?

Hi

If the component is Silver Sulfadiazene, it can be safely used. It is an antibotic cream and your doctor would have given it seeing the secondary infections that might have happened on the diaper rash.
In very severe cases mild steroids with antifungal creams are also given for a short duration.

Along with the usage of creams, following measures have to be followed.
- No diapers till the skin heals perfectly. Keep the area open.
- When cleaning the area, use wet cotton and gently mop the area. Do not wipe it hard. Try not to use baby wipes till it heals.
- Along with the cream prescribed, you may use good diaper rash creams available in the market (Mother care/ Sebamed etc). Use them liberally so that the urine or the stool does not come in direct contact with the skin.

- After he is fine and you decide to resume the use of diapers, keep a diaper free time of 2 to 3 hrs daily during the day time. And use the normal rash creams regularly to prevent recurrence.

Hope I have answered your query.
Best wishes.
