Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have osteopenia and a platelet aggregation disorder - calcium and vitamin D have been suggested for me to take and I have OA which led to bilateral hip replacements. I have been surgically postmenopausal since the age of 36 - I am now 65 and had stopped Boniva pre surgery for the hip replacements in 2012. I also take Synthroid 88 mcg each morning and am currently not on any other medications. Citracal slow release is the calcium (1200 mg) plus vitamin D is the drug I would like to use but am unsure how far away from the Synthroid to take the supplement and am also concerned if I should be placed back on Boniva instead as the last Dexa Scan demonstrated a decrease in bone density when compared to the last Dexa in 2012. Thank you Bonnie
Dear patient You can take citracal alongwith synthyroid tablet without any side effects and drug interactions. Calcium and vitamin d both are required post menopause to increase bone mineral density. Also take bisphonates such as alendronate as it prevent bone de mineralisation. Calcium preparation and bisphonates can be taken for years without side effects. Newer drugs such as teriperitide injections are available which are very effective in improving bone mineral density.
