Hi My daughter has just found out she is pregnant, she has been takeing Trimethoprim, she started it on the 14th Aug the dose should of been 2x200mg she only took 1x200mg. stopped it on the 10th sept when she did the pregnancy test, which was the clear blue it showed 2-3weeks. Spoke to our G.P. he said that it could cause growth abnormalities, my daughter does not want a termination and i would be most grateful if you could reassure us. My Daughter is 19 height 5ft 6 and weighs around 11stone. I do hope you can help us at this difficult time. She is about 7weeks on 27thsept 2011. She started folic acid 15th Sept. Thanking you very much. Mrs Parker
Hi Mrs Parker, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Trimethoprim is FDA category C drug, which means that this drug is found to cause congenital anomalies in animals in various studies done worldwide, but no studies have been done in humans. Such a drug can be given in pregnancy when the benefit of the drug to the patient outweighs the risk associated. Since she had taken very low doses of trimethoprim, the chances of effects on the foetus are low. I would suggest her to stop the drug, if not required essentially, and get a detailed anomaly ultrasound at18-20 weeks to see for any congenital anomalies in the fetus. She should continue taking folic acid tablet. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health. Regards, Dr Deepti Verma
