Is It Safe To Use Topical Steroids On 5 Year Old Child?

I have a 5-year old boy with history of ear infections -- 2 sets of tubes, adenoids taken out. No functional tubes at the moment. Recent ear infection is clearing up but still has pain from pressure imbalance. Doctor prescribed Flonase (as preferable to another set of tubes). My instinct is to prefer another set of tubes over a topical steroid. How safe are topical steroids for children (assuming extended use)?

Hello and thanks for your question. Topical steroids can cause some problems with growth if they are used for prolonged periods of time. Over a month or two it should be fine, but I agree with you that if it is not absolutely necessary, I would not want him to be on topical steroids indefinitely.
