Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, i am a 31 year old female, no children, and every month about a week before my menstrual cycle the glands or nodes in my arm pits swell. They get really big and tend to be rather painful. Same goes for my breasts, almost a whole cup size larger. When i was about 22 years old i had a cyst the size of an orange on one of my ovaries, and was put on some type of steroid treatment to shrink it. I have had these issues along with weight fluctuation. I have tried to lose weight, exercise and healthier eating but my weight drops one pound one week then gain three the following week. I am unsure if any of these are related, but please... tell me what in your opinion may be the issue and if i should be worried. thank you for your time.
Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Ivo Ditah's Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. In some persons, there are accessory mammary glands that extend into the armpit. The same changes that go on with the breast during the menstrual cycle also go on in these glands. It is probably the case with you and reason why you have these rather similar symptoms. As for your weight, the weight is never a constant number. It fluctuates but stays about the same range. Large changes should raise concerns and not changes of 1pound. There is no reason to get worried at this time about your weight. Also, what is your weight and height so that I can compute your body mass index(BMI) and see how well you are doing on your numbers.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
