Is Kidney Transplant Advisable After Suffering A Heart Attack?

My Dad had a heart attack this week, and his kidney readings dropped back down to 11, on the scale of 1 to 20. They had improved to 16 from 11 over the last few months, responding to a change in diet & medications prescribed by his kidney specialist. Next week they want to do surgery and put in a catheter so he can start Dialysis @ home, if he needs it. I am worried that this will severely affect his quality of life. Is it necessary always to do this now? Can his kidney numbers go back up once he recovers from his heart attack, so he won t need Dialysis, or is this a certain, imminent next step? His number went up to 12 today, but he also has high blood pressure, which has been up to 183 yesterday, and was 175 over 101 today, improving a little. They are trying different heart and kidney meds in the hospital now, and his swollen ankles & feet are coming down. He is 85, but usually very healthy. Is he eligible for a kidney transplant? Thank-you, concerned daughter.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, if after the heart attack, a repeat echocardiogram after two weeks show good ejection fraction and no evidence of congestive cardiac failure, and recovery is good with no severe valve damage, and his health is good with respect to his age, and no other pre morbids, only then kidney transplant may be considered.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
