Is Lifelong Prunelax Intake Advisable For Constipation?

I have had problems with constipation all my life. My transverse colon is an accordion rather than straight. I do not know if that has anything to do with it. I have tried many natural remedies such as Metamucil hoping to find something I can take on a regular basis. Nothing worked. I became aware of Prunelax and it works. . Is it ok if I would take just one everyday indefinitely?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms could be due to enteropathy, fecoliths obstruction, inadequate fiber intake, diabetes, and hypothyroidism. I would suggest to consult the gastroenterologist and undergo routine blood test, thyroid hormone analysis, ultrasound scan of abdomen, colonic transit studies, defecography and colonoscopy examination.

The below suggestions will help you:

1. Glycerine enema for immediate relief
2. Syrup Lactulose can be taken
3. Tab bisacodyl can be useful
4. Bulking agents like isabgol, husk will help
5. Lifestyle changes

Drink one spoon of honey in warm water daily in morning before the bowel movement. Eat high fiber diet. Every meal should have salads and fruits with skin. Drink 2 to 4 litres of water daily. Daily evening and morning walk for 30 to 45 minutes will help to regularize the bowel movement. Take more fruits and green leafy vegetables in the diet. Set up a regular time for the motion.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if any follow up is needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
