Is Low Platelets Of A Newborn Life Threatening Problem?

My newborn son was born on 7-31-12. He s been in NICU the entire time . When we go to visit him he seems fine and is not hooked up on life support. The Doctors say he has low Plalets . Is this life threatening ? We are not getting much information for the staff.
