Is My Heart Rate Too Fast ?

I m a 13 year old girl, I m not under or over weight...I m normal. In PE at school we had to measure our resting heart rate and mine was 116bpm. Then after about 10 minutes of moderate exercise we had to take our heart rate again and mine was 180bpm. Mine was the highest both for resting heart rate and after the exercise out of about 60 kids the same age as me. So i just wondered if it was faster than normal. It doesn t particularly bother me if it is. Thanks.

The average heart rate for a 13 year old female, is approximately the same as an adults, which is 60 to 100 bpm. A lower heart rate is common in those who are very athletic. A higher heart rate can be more common in someone with much stress, a little less active, or someone who drinks a lot of caffeine on a daily basis. A resting heart rate of 116 is a little high for your age, but it sounds as if you weren't experiencing any symptoms at the time, such as difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, sweating, pain et cetera. If you were a little worked up about anything, or had caffeine that day, these could contribute to your higher rate. Your target heart rate during exercise can be determine by a formula known as the Karvonen Formula. It is as follows: 220 minus your age X 60% for the lower end and 220 minus your age X 90% for the upper. Meaning, your target rate during exercise should be between 124 and 186. 220-13=207 207x0.60=124 220-13=207 207x0.90=186 It sounds as if your target heart rate, although on the higher side, was still within normal limits for your age group and if you weren't experiencing any abnormal symptoms, I would not worry about it. If you are concerned about the resting heart rate, I would talk to your family doctor. They can work with you and help you determine why it was a little higher than normal. Good luck to you! I hope I was able to help out!
