Is Oxycontine An Addictive Medication?

Thank you. Tell me just how addictive is oxycontine as prescribed bu drs. at the rehab. hosp I was sent to after an infection in the prosthesis in my hip was cleared up. They said I needed exercised to regain the use of the leg again. I m still on the drug after four years and feel it should perhaps be replaced by something else for the treatment of all other pains I am experiencing.

Hello,
This is Dr. Klarida Papaqako answering your question.

Yes, OxyContin is an addictive medication and a really dangerous one if you take it with other drugs, alcohol, or take/stop it in the wrong way.

I agree that if the reason why you were put on the medicine is not a problem anymore, you should stop the medication, so you can use simple analgesics for your other pains.
But, since it is an addictive medication, it will surely give withdrawal symptoms if you stop if right away. which may come to be very dangerous after.
You need to be followed by a doctor, to make plan together in stopping it gradually, and him/her to follow you up closely on those symptoms.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Tushar Kanti Biswas's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

OxyContin (oxycodone) is an opioid pain medication
OxyContin may be habit-forming, even at regular doses.
Oxycodone may cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms on discontinuation.
It is necessary to evaluate patient's continuing need for therapy since psychological and physical dependence and tolerance may develop.

Regards
