Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Painful And Swollen Fingers With History Of Cut In Knuckes Concerning?
I cut the top middle part of my middle finger knuckle about a year ago. I had no insurance so I took care of it myself. Kept it splinted and cleaned daily until it seemed to have healed. The past few weeks my finger seems to be swollen and very painful when I try to close my hand. In fact it can t completely close it unless I force it and that hurts...what do you think I should do, I have very limited medical insurance covers basically yearly physical and not much else.
I have studied your case and I do not think that it is related to your past history of injury. Rather ai think that it is due to trigger finger. In this there is thickening of the tendon sheath. This prevents movement of the tendon and causes pain during making a fist. I would suggest you to do hot water fomentation and physiotherapy. If it is not get under control than you will need steroid injection to take care of the pain. It is given by a specialist. If even after steroid injection pain is not under control than you will need a minor surgery in which tendon sheath is excised. After this your finger movement will be completely pain free. I hope this answer will be useful. Let me know if there is any other follow up questions. Thanks
