Is Polyhydramios A Serious Issue During Pregnancy?

I am 38 weeks & just had an appointment with my doctor on Thursday. After he saw the ultra sounds from Tuesday he said that I have a slight case of Polyhydramnios. Although he said they are not worried about it, he kept repeating the diagnostic which made me think I should worry. The ultra sound Tuesday was for est. fetal weight & the ultra sound tech said she was measuring 7lbs 9oz. Do I need to worry about the Polyhydramios? I don t see my regular OB doctor until Friday to inform her & see what she wants to do.

Hi,
Thanks for consulting us.
Polyhydramnios means presence of excess fluid in your water bag. It makes a pregnancy high risk because of its association with Diabetes & fetal anomalies. However, mild cases may have no underlying cause but could still lead to some maternal & fetal complications. So, such women need extra surveillance during pregnancy, labour & delivery. Babies also need Pediatric review after delivery. Your Estimated fetal weight is within normal limits. Just see your doctor as planned. Avoid exertion. Report to hospital at first sign of labour or if you water bag ruptures.
Take care.
