Is Pus Like Thick Liquid In Thyroid Nodule Normal?

I just have Fine needle aspiration on the thyroid nodules. The biopsy result is not available until 10 days later. During the procedure, the doctor and the assistant said that the liquid is very thick, like puss. Is it unusual? What can it be? The Thyroid nodules were there for more than 2 years already. It moves while swallowing.

Good day,

I'm sorry you are experiencing these symptoms. Aspirating pus most often occurs when there is a cyst which has formed an abscess, which is essentially a pocketed wall of infection. Usually this may not require surgery, and in most cases the doctor will drain the abscess and then inject antibiotics, to rid the cavity of any remaining infection. I would contact the physician, describe what you see, and ask whether antibiotics were given, and or the cyst was completely drained, and if not you can schedule a repeat appointment to have this done.

Do not fret. This is not necessarily a malignant or bad sign and based on my experience it is something that when addressed properly can be fixed. Sometimes the issue itself will spontaneously regress, with the cyst being absorbed by your body, blood and immune system! Nonetheless, I think its best you communicate with your physician and speak with him/her of these very details that you divulged here.

I wish you the best and that all your concerns be shortly seen to. I also wish you the best of news your biopsy results, which very well may be benign and or easily fixable. If this is not the case, there are options; and I'm confident you can be given them in a manner of which you are comfortable and can be strong.
