Is Scarguard Effective In Minimizing Scarring Due To Stitches?

My 3 year old son was biten on the cheek and lip by the family Husky/Malamute mix a month ago. He was rushed to the ER where he received seven stitches on his cheek...one dissolvable one on the inside of his cheek and two on his lip. We went in a week later to have the stitches removed only to realize infection had set in. So, the wound had to be reopened and only stitched up part way with the remainder open for drainage. Later, steri-strips were applied to hold the skin together and now the wound is closed and seems to be healing. I am applying Vitamin E from capsules on it several times daily. I bought an over the counter scar ointment, ScarGuard, but want to know if it is safe for him. The pharmacist recommended it, but he didn t know much about it either. Should I use this or is there any other route I should pursue to minimize his scarring?

Hello,

Scarguard liquid is a combination of vitamin E and other substances like cortisone, silicone although the one you are mentioning has these ingredients or some other? This is claimed to be helpful in reducing scars although, I suggest you consult your doctor before using it.

Is your son allergic to anything? Children's skin is sensitive and delicate as compare to the adults' so before using any product on skin, its better to consult a dermatologist or your doctor. Let the doctor decide about its usage depending on its content. Follow his instructions on this for more benefits.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
