Is Skin Redness A Side Effect Of BP Medicine?

Hi, I have been on Bendrofluazide for 18months or so now for high blood pressure. Around the same time I developed red blotches on my nose and cheeks, and was told it was Rosea. I didn t want any medication for this until 2 months ago. The Dr put me on an antibiotic, Minocycline 50mg, which I have taken since with no relief, in fact I feel it has worsened. Is this reddening of the skin a side effect from the blood pressure medication??

Yes, it seems to be a photosensitivity reaction due to BP lowering medication.

Bendrofluazide is a thiazide diuretic ("water pill") commonly used in the treatment of high BP, heart failure and other conditions.

Based on the history given you have developed Bendrofluazide induced skin rash referred to as photosensitivity reaction.

Drug induced photosensitivity occurs when a drug like Bendrofluazide combines with ultraviolet rays in the sunlight to cause a phototoxic or photoallergic reaction on the sun exposed areas like nose and cheeks.

The prescribed Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic is also known to cause photosensitivity reactions hence it has exaggerated the skin reactions.

Stop taking these medications and consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective medication to lower your BP.
