Is Spinal Tuberculosis Transferable From One Generation To Other?

Dear Dr. Greetings from Nepal.

I m 28 yrs old. I had a spinal tuburclosis at the age of 16. I was under treatment almost for a year with complete bed rest for 6 months. I was fully cured at that time but sometimes since last three years I have experienced to have pain on various parts of my bone. I had a cervical pain just in 2009 so I consulted with my old doctor who treated my spinal TB so now cured. My question to you is that does it affect my baby if I get pregnant or if I want to conceive? Is it communicable from generation to generation? Please advise me if it affects my baby.

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Spinal tuberculosis and for that reason any form of tuberculosis is not transmitted genetically from generation to generation , I mean it is not genetically transmitted.

It can be transmitted congenitally from mother to baby , if mother suffering from tuberculosis of genital tract but in your case chances of transmission are not there as you have been treated for tuberculosis and are cured and more over you were suffering from spinal tuberculosis.

More common is infection for the neonate is postnatal airborne transmission from an adult with infectious pulmonary tuberculosis , which you are not suffering.

But as there is family history of tuberculosis , be cautious and any member of your family having cough , fever of long duration , or history of weight loss needs to be evaluated for tuberculosis.

In nutshell , it is not transmitted from generation to generation genetically and as of now chances of your baby getting tuberculosis form you are not there.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.

Wishing you and your coming baby a good health.
