Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, the structural abnormalities of the brain cause epilepsy and other symptoms such as mental retardation. We use the drugs for 2-3 years to control fits. If we cannot the patient should have a surgery to control fits only. The structural abnormalities cannot be treated by surgery. After the surgery the patient would not have fits anymore and we can stop anti-epileptic drugs.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mustafa, Neurologist
