Is The White Patches On Nails Due To Any Deficiency ?

Hi, on the nails of my 16 month old daughter we see white patches. Are these white patches due to any deficancy? If yes what care needs to be taken such that they do not occur again.

In most cases, when white spots appear on a single or a couple of fingers or toes, the most common cause is injury to the base (matrix) of the nail. When this is the case, white spots disappear after around eight weeks, which is the amount of time necessary for nails to regrow completely.
White patches (leuckonychia ) can also be a result of trauma, arsenic lead and heavy metal poisoning.

An occasional white spot is usually evidence that the immune system overcame a bacterial or some other systemic infection.

Hello;
welcome to HealthcareMagic
White spots on mails or Leukonychia is a condition seen commonly in children who have a habit of nail biting.The common causes are nail biting;injury to the nail bed and even in case of deficiencies of calcium and mineral;low albumin;as a result of some antibiotics and even in diseases of liver and kidney.If your child does not have any symptom or any problem then you need not worry and just give her multivitamins and minerals(calcium ) and in a period of 8-12 weeks it should go away.
Thanks
