Hello,
As per your description, I learnt that you had a neurosurgery done for
head injury and you were started on medicines to prevent seizures or
fits.
First of all, I will let you know with this limited amount of information about your case that yes most of the neurosurgeries done for head injuries requires anti-epileptic medications to prevent fits or seizures.
The 2 common reasons why you are prone to get seizures is:
1. Primary pathology (haemorrhage or direct
brain injury) as they can irritate the brain and cause seizure activity.
2. Is scarring in the brain which happens during recovery of your injured brain. So, it is always advisable to take antiepileptic medications after these surgeries.
Now the second part of your query is when you can stop the medications. Usually, there should be 2 year seizures free interval before you can start decreasing the medication and there is 90% chance that you may not have any seizure activity in your life again.
Generally I prefer
Eptoin over
Oxetol drug.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Yogesh Kataria
