Is There Any Alternative To Oxycodone For Managing Chronic Back Pain?

My husband has been taking oxycodone for chronic pain in his back. He had hepC and cured by harvoni. He only has half a liver due to this disease. With the current push to reduce opioid use, we have been trying to find something else that will not affect his liver. Is there anything he can use? Everything found can cause more liver damage. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A new oral, dual-action painkiller is available this week for the treatment of adults with severe chronic pain such as osteoarthritis (OA), lower back and cancer pain, which can only be adequately managed with opioid analgesics like Oxycodone.
Tapentadol prolonged release (Palexia SR) is a centrally acting analgesic that works as a µ-opioid receptor agonist and through noradrenaline reuptake inhibition. It is being marketed as a Schedule 2 Controlled Drug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
