Is Voluntary Suffocation Advisable For A Child With Previous Brain Injury?
Hi there, I just received a disturbing email from my daughters school in relation to her peers taking part in a new social media trend called voluntary suffocation. My concern is that these kids are close friends with my daughter and forturnatley for her she was away on the day that this happened. To add to my concern my daughter had an AVM which burst on her first birthday so I was wondering what kind of impact this would have or could have on someone with a previous brain injury. Im thinking that this maybe something I need to address with the school so they are aware that it could have been much worse. Regards Tamara YYYY@YYYY
As per my clinical experience, there can be significant outcomes of voluntary suffocation in child with history of previous brain injury. The pathophysiology behind the damage includes breath holding induced changes in arterial carbon dioxide levels with cerebral hypoxia and hypoxemia immediately.
There are all high chances of transient or permanent brain damage ranging from: @ Transient ischemic attacks @ Focal neurologic deficits @ Hemiparesis @ Hemiplegia or others
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
