Jaw Clicking When Mouth Opened After Being Punched. Solution?

Hi I sustained an injury to my jaw when I was punched by an ex boyfriend in the face. Ever since, my jaw clicks when i open and close my mouth, it feels like the jaw does not align when i open and close my mouth and it goes more to the left as I close my mouth.

It is sometimes pretty painful, and the clicking is very loud. I am worried I will get arthritis from it.
I have been told by an orthodontist that I probably need physio or surgery.

Can you please advise what this could be and what I should do? It has been 6 years since the original injury.

Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
It seems that due to old local injury there might be subluxation of TM joint or lax muscles at the joint giving rise to this problem.
An orthodentist after examination can decide line of treatment, physiotherapy or surgery.
Meanwhile do not wide open your mouth.
While yawning or opening gig mouth keep your fingers on the joint and give protection.
Avoid chewing hard stuff.
Ok and bye.
