Lump On Thigh. MRI Showed A Dark Shadow. Had No Accident. What Is This?
I have a lump about the size of a lemon on the outside of my right thigh (It doesn t hurt and I only noticed it when I was rubbing my leg with lotion). I had an MRI and I can see the area where the lump is has a dark shadow compared to the rest of the images. When the radiologist looked at it he asked if I had an injury (not that I know of) or am I taking a blood thinner (no). I ve asked my orthopedic Dr. to call me today once he looks at it, but I haven t heard from him yet. I have heard that dark shadows on MRI s are not as worrisome at white spots. What might a dark shadow mean?
MRI scans can be T1 or T2 weighted (two methods of obtaining images). In T1-weighted scans water is darker and the fat is whiter. In T2-weighted images water is whiter and the fat is darker. So not knowing what type of images were yours it is hard to answer your questions.
However according to what radiologist has told you I assume that the lump is a fluid accumulation. If so, it can be a hamatoma for example due to some trauma.
Such lump can be also a lipoma or other benign lump. If your orthopedist wont give you the answer what exactly it is, I suggest you to have simple ultrasound of this lump and depending of the time of it removal or incision will cure it.
Hope this will help.
Regards.
