MRI Scan Showing Shadows On Brain. Waiting For Lumbar Puncture Results. Am I Having MS?

Hi. I have had an xray , an mri scan and a lumber punture done recently because i am showing signs of maybe having M.S...so far, iv been told that the mri scan has shown there are shadows on my brain..I am still waiting on results from the lumber puncture..my appointment isnt for another three weeks..What are shadows in the brain? and how long does it usually take for shadows to appear if it is M.S. that i have?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

In multiple sclerosis, there are white matter hyperintense lesions, which are very well seen on T2W and FLAIR images on MRI of brain and spinal cord. They enhance with contrast injections.

The lesions can persist for weeks to months, and new white matter lesions appear when new symptoms come.

Lumbar puncture (CSF analysis) shows high protein, and presence of oligoclonal bands.

You can discuss these details with your neurologist.
