Menopausal. Hormones Are High, Hit Flushes, High BP. On Clonidine. Why Would This Happen?

i am 49 years old and have just been told that i am in the menopausal state as my hormones are sky high. I have been prescribed clonidine for the terrible hot flushes that i am getting nearly all the time. But i am concerned that clonidine is ised to treat high blood pressure and my blood pressure is healthy and spot on , so i am concerned that it will affect my blood pressure. could this happen?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
It is natural with the age and your estrogen hormone decline and hence hormone like FSH level rise and indication of menopause.
Hot flashes are symptoms of menopause and there are certain other effects like skin dryness and osteoporosis.
Hot flashes are treated by hormone replacement therapy but your Gynecologist will decide if it is suitable for you or not as estrogen increases risk of breast cancer.
Non hormonal treatment is clonidine it works in some individuals, yes it can decrease blood pressure so be careful to check with doctor.
Possible side effects of clonidine include:
Drowsiness, fatigue,Dry mouth.Difficulty sleeping.Dizziness.Nausea.
Please also watch for postural drop in Blood pressure called orthostatic Hypotension.
Do not suddenly stop taking clonidine. To stop clonidine use, slowly decrease your dose over 2 to 4 days
Take care
Good Luck.
