Middle Finger Knuckle Is Swollen, Red, Hard. Could It Be Gout?

A couple of days ago I noticed that one side of my right middle finger knuckle is swollen. It is not painful and the swelling is very hard (like bone) - I wondered if it could be gout? The area that is swollen is quite red - there are no cuts there and I can t remember hitting it. I m 26, female, and a normal weight.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

If there is no history of injury to the area and there is localized pain and swelling then most likely it is related to a local joint inflammation. You can take ibuprofen thrice daily after meals, you can do iceing and apply a local analgesic on the area for relief. Avoid moving the finger much until the inflammation subsides. This should be alright in 7-10 days if it is a minor inflammation.

In case the symptoms are persistent then consulting an orthopedician for prescription medicines will be helpful.
