Minor Heart Attack, Aortic Valve Not Working Properly. Replacement Of Biological Valve Suggested. ECG, Echo Done. Advise?

sir, my father is 65 years old. last week he had a minor heart attack then he took some test like ECG, echo, and in echo report there is some problem in his aortic valve and report shows his aortic valve is not working properly . our cardiac surgeon told us to replace a biological valve, but my dad is afraid. By the by now he don't feel any problem in his body . So that tell us pls should we replace the valve now? if yes then what kind of valve we should replace?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear Sir

Thanks for writing to us.

1. Valve replacement is usually indicated when there is "SEVERE" degree of narrowing or leakage along with some pre-specified criteria. They may be symptoms due to valve disease, decreasing pumping of heart, enlargement of heart/ aorta (major blood vessel) or rapidly increasing narrowing. Since this requires patient's examination and other data, it would not be prudent to advise on this by me. Please consult your CARDIOLOGIST for same.

2. On more issue will come up , once it is finalized to go for valve replacement. He will have to undergo angiogram and depending upon its finding may have to get a bypass/stenting procedure (as he had a heart attack) in addition to valve replacement.

3. At age of 65, a bioprosthetic valve will be preferred , if there are no other issues.

I hope it makes things simpler for you.

Good luck.

sincerely

Cardiologist Dr. Anantharamakrishnan's  Response
Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

It is rather inappropriate to give a judgement based on insufficient information..
Several parameters are needed for a conclusion - the size of the valve and ventricular function, as also his coronary artery status are some of the major determinants...

Absence of symptoms is no proof of absence of disease.
Discuss with his cardiologist / if necessary, have a second opinion

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
