Muscle Cramp, Pain, Xiphoid Process Seems To Be Missing. Is Is Possible For It To Bend And Move Some?

I am a college student that lays on my stomach most afternoons to do homework. Today as I was laying I felt a pain like a pulled muscle. I ignored it until it woke me up at 5 am where it hurt a little to breathe and move. Being a pre med student I immediately felt around my rib cage to see if anything was off or if any muscles were inflamed. My xiphoid process seems to be missing. I know I have had one, but it is missing now. Is is possible for it to bend and move some? Should I go to the ER to get it checked out?

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The pain in the xiphoid process could be due to an inflammation in the area or a mild displacement due to a muscle sprain. A direct examination is needed for proper diagnosis.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
