Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having problems with elimination for the past few weeks. My stool is very hard and comes out like big marbles. I am taking a medication that says it may cause constipation but no matter if I take stool softener s, it still is a big problem. Ay suggestions for easier BM s? Dorothy
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of hard stool coming out as big marbles for the past week, taking some medication which says can cause constipation. Taking laxatives but the big problem persists. As per the short history and failure to respond to stool softeners indicate that you have to stop the medication you are taking and changeover to another one not causing constipation. There is a possibility of having large impacted fecoliths . Hence I would further advise; X-ray of the abdomen to see for fecoliths and if present you may need a formal enema for evacuation. Continuation of stool softeners and change over to others o dosages as per requirements as this is always subjective. Also identify the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems and stop temporarily till you get complete cure and to start after about one month.
