Need Surgery For A Broken Wrist. Will There Be Any Nerve Damage Due To Delay In Surgery?

My sister was taken to hospital on Tuesday with a severe break to her right wrist, (she is right handed) the hospital tried to realign the fracture under sedation and applied a cast but decided that the fracture was unstable and required surgery. The hospital kept her in overnight and were supposed to operate yesterday. The operation didn't take place and she is due to have it today but is still waiting. What is the anticipated wait time for this type of operation and if there is nerve damage will the delay cause irreperable damage to the hand?

Hello,
Welcome at HCM.

I have read your question. The best timing for surgery after a wrist fracture is first 24 hours. But there is no contraindication for doing this after 24 hours. In case of excessive swellings surgery can be postponed.

Damaged nerves can also be repaired after 24 hours but not after 9 months ,best results are obtained in early repairs.

Hope this all will help you.

With best wishes.
