Numbness In Top Of Left Foot. History Of Lumbar Fusion For Which Piece Of Hipbone Was Removed. Advice

Hello. Nearly seven years ago I had lumbar fusion for which they removed a piece of my left hipbone. That incision and scar tissue still bother me but my concern is that the top of my left foot increasingly feels numb. I was told that a nerve from my hip is involved and there is a stretch that will help but I neither know the name of the nerve or remember the stretch. I'd like to work on this, with proper tools, if anyone can advise me. Thank you.

Hi,
It seems that you are having some irritation or pressure on nerve passing through lumbar spines giving rise to this problem.
Go for physiotherapy and go for back extension exercise.
Sleep on hard bed.
Take some vitamin B1, B6, B12 capsules.
Ok and take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Milind Merchant's  Response
Hello,

Having numbness in top of left foot, and having had a lumbar surgery before points us to a nerve compression in lumbar spine which supplies top of the toe. this nerve is known as the L5 Root.

Sometimes, patients who have had lumbar fusion surgeries in past develop nerve compression which then can be due to thickening of ligaments in spinal canal close to the nerve concerned.

Nerve from hip will never cause toe numbness.

Exercises like back extension, Core stabilization, Postural training can help but the correct exercise can be guided only if you get a Fresh MRI of Lumbar spine to see the cause of nerve compression and amount of compression.

You can get back to me for any further queries,

I hope this helps you,

Regards,

Dr Merchant
