HI. 53 years female, I have swelling in both ankles. Type 2 diabetes with good numbers. This is a first. I take insulin twice daily. Take meds for BP and depression. Diagnosed with Diabetes one year ago. I am active, but have had a lower lumbar back problem past 2-3 months. MRI taken, do not know results, take Tylenol #3 as needed.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Since you are a patient of diabetes type 2 with hypertension.
Depression present but that is not a cause of concern.
Diabetic patients are very prone to kidney problems.
Swelling over ankles ( both) means there is fluid retention in body.
Kidneys are responsible for water secretion from body through urine.
So please once again consult a diabetologist/physician and get in complete examination of RENAL FUNCTION TESTS.
This will reveal the exact cause of ankles swelling.
2nd reason may hypo-proteinaemia ( less amount of protein in body).
This is also related to kidney and diabetes.
In anemia few patients develops swelling over lower part of legs( ankles).
Hope I have answered your query.
If further any question I will help.
Good luck.
Dr. HET
