On Pravachol For High Cholesterol. Extreme Muscle Pain In Thighs And Legs After Increasing Dosage. Stop Medication?
I am a 49 year old female that has been on Pravachol due to high cholesterol. I initially took 40 mg per day for 3 months and my physician recently increased it to 80 mg per day. For the last 7 to 10 days I have been suffering from extreme muscle pain in my thighs and legs - to the point where I am having a hard time walking and the pain keeps me awake at night. Should I stop taking the Pravachol? I had some muscle aches when I was on the 40 mg but nothing compared to the pain I am in now. I am an avid walker and have been unable to do this due to the extreme pain I am having.
Pravachol is a statin group of drug and high doses may have side effect by increase in lactic acid in muscles as a side effect accounting to muscle ache and pains especially if higher doses are taken for long time. So consult your physician who may consider it to lower the dose to maintain the beneficial affects on cholesterol control
