Pain From The Groin To The Knee And Lower Right Leg. Stopped Exercising. Broke Hip Years Back. Suggestion?

I broke my hip 15 years ago and in the last year or so have experienced pain from the groin to the knee area and lower right leg, especially after exercise. My posture is not great as one leg longer than the other which has meant for years I have been walking and standing slightly out of kilter. I have recently had to give up exercise due to the pain worsening after excercise, but really miss it. Pain just is not getting a lot better though even though I have not been to a gym for over a month now. Is there anything I can do to help improve my chances of not getting this pain back constantly? thanks.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From your description I consider two possibilities for the cause of your pain -

(1) Hip pathology - You might have developed arthritic changes in the hip secondary to your injury 15 yrs back. This damaged hip causes increased pain being felt only during activities. But the pain arising from the hip joint will not radiate below the level of knee joint.

(2) Lumbar disc disease - pain arising due to a disc compressing the nerve will be felt all along the leg down into the ankles & feet.

So, you need a thorough evaluation for both the hip & L.S. spine to diagnose the exact cause of your pain.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for further workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
