Pain In Shoulder, Neck. Numbness, Soreness. Treatment?

For many years I have had pain in my trapezius, mainly on my left shoulder . This stemmed originally from habit of me clicking my neck. The pain is sometimes at the top of my neck and at times below my shoulder blade but the most painful area is mid-shoulder area. Most days the pain is hardly noticeable but on some days it is extremely sore and almost unbearable, the top of my shoulder and that whole area can also feel quite numb a lot. I have tried seeing my GP who just referred me to a physiotherapist who told me to do exercises with my neck but it hasn t really helped. Recently I have tried leaning against a tennis ball on a wall and letting it roll around the painful area- it does seem to help but the pain comes back after a few minutes. If anyone knows what this is and the best way to treat it I would be so relieved.
