Pain, Severe Bruises, Swelling On Falling. Slight Protrusion In Outer Arm, Tugging Feeling In Elbow. Hairline Fracture Possible?

Three weeks ago I was running one evening, and my dog ran between my legs causing me to fall full force on my left arm. I fell on asphalt and also received several cuts. A few minutes later I nearly passed out. We went to the ER, and the attending doctor felt sure there was a fracture (especially where there was a raised area that just didn't look right.) The xrays showed no fracture. There was pain, severe bruising, and swelling at first. Additionally, I had trouble moving my arm to full extension for several days. They had to "glue" several cuts. I can now move my arm completely and it has virtually healed; however there is still a slight protrusion on my outer arm that is hard to the touch and hurts if i lay on that arm. Also, when I straighten my arm all the way out there is a slight tugging feeling at the elbow. Could it have a hairline fracture?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

As the initial xrays (after your fall) are negative for fractures, you cannot expect a fracture again without any injury.

Propably due to soft tissue contusions and hematoma formation, there will be some amount of tightness within the muscles giving you that feeling.

Please follow the below mentioned general guidelines to alleviate your symptoms

* Rest to the injured part and dont involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Moist heat application over the affected areas to relax the soft tissues
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications as and when needed

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
