Pain, Soreness In The Back After Falling Off Ladder, Extreme Pain In Left Leg, Difficulty In Lifting. Advice?

I fell about 3 feet off a ladder yesterday. Had initial pain and soreness in my lower back. But walked it off - last night I iced my lower back, took ibuprofen and went to bed. Woke up in the middle of the night with extreme pain in my upper left leg. I can t put weight on in and it hurts to bend at hip or to sit - should I see a medical doctor, chiropactor or massage therapist?

Dear Concerned.,

Thanks for writing to us.

The cause of pain in lower back could be due to Radiculopathy/Nerve Root Compression as a result of trauma leading to displacement of Intervertebral Disc bulge or Sciatic Nerve root compression also known as Sciatica. The Best Investigative Procedure for confirming the same is an MRI Scan if facilities are available to you.

The Chiropracter/Massage therapist can do more harm than good to you at present.

Kindly follow the undermentioned advice,

a)Use a Hard Bed rest ie., without Cushions for Bed Rest for more than 06 weeks.

b)Pls do not abruptly bend /lift any weight during the above period.

c)Consult a Physiotherapist for Short Wave Diathermy/Traction for the area affected.

d)consult a Medical Doctor for a Prescription Oral Analgesic and Muscle relaxant Tab and Sprays for a few days.

e)In addition you may request for a Lumbosacral Belt for your waist size from an Orthopedic Vendor to aid immobilization of affected area during any minimal movements during the acute phase.

Get well soon.

Best Regards,

Dr Lt Cdr ASN Bhushan.
