Painful Lump At The Back Of Left Side Of Head, Sore To Touch. What To Do ?

Hello I have developed a painful lump at the back of the left side of my head, it has become more painful today and is very sore to touch, the lump is under the skin about the size of a 10cent piece and has grown over night and I am worried. I am 65yrs old thank you Joy I am a senior pensioner and at the moment I don't have any funds to pay thanks should I go straight to my GP I am able to pay for this service on the 27th June 2013

Hi,
This may be a sebaceous cyst that has become infected. They are relatively common on the scalp and you may have had it some time but only noticed it since it has become infected and inflamed.
The treatment is usually antibiotics and possibly surgery if it is big enough and it doesn't resolve with antibiotics. It is not a very urgent emergency that needs immediate attention but may continue to be painful until treated.
In the meantime, try to keep the area clean and dry. Warm compresses may help the inflammation.
