Periods Delayed After Unprotected Sex. Pregnancy Test Negative. Feeling Bloated With Cramps. Am I Pregnant?

Hi, I will be 43 on Jan. 5, 2014. I have always had a very predictable cycle. Usually right on 28 days. For the past year (Since Jan. 2013), I have been a little off but not much. Some months I will be 2 days late or the next month, I may be 2-3 days early. The latest that I have ever been was in January and I was 4 days late. My period always lasts for 6-7 days. My last period started November 27. I was scheduled to start on December 24. On December 20, my husband and I had unprotected sex. I did not think a lot about it since I was going to start in 4 days, I knew that my chance of getting pregnant was pretty much zero. As of today (December 31), I still have not started. I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests and both showed negative. Today I went for a blood test and it also came back negative. I have been bloated and having cramps in my lower abdomen around my ovaries. Could I be pregnant or is it more likely that I am starting perimenopause?

Hi,

I can understand your concern towards delayed period after unprotected sex and feeling of bloating and cramps recently.

Let me first reassure you that your symptoms are not related to pregnancy.

In general if unprotected sex is done from 10th to 17th day of last menses then are quite unsafe and can result in pregnancy. So you count your days accordingly.

That is why as you have gone for home test of urine sample for pregnancy and it came negatively.

Your symptoms of bloating and cramps in abdomen are due to some other reason than pregnancy. It can be due to minor food change or some infection in intestine. These symptoms are never seen in pregnancy or menopause so meet a family physician to take care of abdominal infection.
