Pregnant. US Scan Report States Live Fetus In The Uterine Cavity With Head In Variable Position. Explain?
Hello Dr... My daughter is in her 4th month of pregnancy.. her US scanning reports have the following. Single live fetus in the uterine cavity with head in variable position. FHR 143 beats per minutes Cranium Seen; Spine Seen; Cardia 4 chamber view; Kidneys Seen; Gestational Age by LMP: 17 wks 0 days LMP date 27.10.2012 Stomach Seen Urinary Bladder seen; Face seen; umbilical cord : Three vessel cord BPD 3.6 cms. 17 wks. 1 day EDD by LMP - 3.8.2013 HC 13.0 cms 16 wks 4 days. E.F.W. 166 gms. AC 11.2 cms. 17 weeks 1 day. EDD by fetal biometry - 5.8.2013 FL 2.1 cms. 16 weks 2 days. Placenta : Anterior wall, lower edge 1.7 cm from internal os Grade 0 maturity. Retroplacental Clot - not present Liquor Adequate; Fetal movements present; Internal os: closed; Cervical canal length normal. IMP: Single live intrauterine gestation of 16 wks. 5 days in variable presentation. My Question is that in this scan report -any problem mentioned in the placenta level or any other problem in the above mentioned scan report.

The ultrasound report is fine and corresponding to the gestational age. Variable presentation is a normal feature at this stage of pregnancy as the fetus constantly moves its position owing to the adequate liquor quantity and the smaller size. Anterior placenta may cause the perception of fetal movements to be less later in pregnancy, else there will not be any problem in pregnancy. Wish your daughter a safe motherhood.

There is no problem with the ultrasound of your daughter. It appears perfect as organogenensis is perfectly progressing with no abnormalities. More so, her estimated gestational age from the ultrasound corresponds to her chronological gestational age from her last menstrual period. The heart beat, number of vessels in the umbilical cord, placenta location, closed cervix, etc are all expected findings in a normal pregnancy.
At the gestational age now, the foetus will present at various variable lie until after 34-36 weeks of gestational that the lie becomes permanent.
A follow up scan is usually needed at 30 weeks of gestation to examine the placenta type and rule out morphological abnormalities.
