Hello, thanks for using HCM.
Prolonged periods of more than seven days or periods that are very heavy is termed menorrhagia. Menorrhagia is a common reason for seeing a gynecologist and most women who consult due to abundant bleeding basically are rather scared of loosing too much blood than do have underlying pathologies. However, when its menorrhagia indeed, an appropriate diagnosis has to be made from amongst the many possible causes. Painful prolonged menses are typical of pelvic inflammatory diseases, endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, uterine fibroids and dysfunctional bleeding which generally are painless causes of prolonged menses could be associated with mild pains. Use of hormonal contraceptives and pre-menopause could cause prolonged bleeding though generally not painful.
In your case, the prolonged menses is definitely abnormal and the exclusion of pregnancy related causes from the negative pregnancy test is quite re-assuring. You need to visit your gynecologists for appropriate evaluation and priscribtion cause heay bleeding could be complicated by severe anemia
