Prostate Operation, Blood Clot In Urinary Bladder, Blood In Urine, Not Feeling Well

Sir, My father who is 78 years old, had gone through prostate operation on 17th Jan. 12, but during the operation it was found by the doctor that there was blood clot in the urine bladder , which he removed it and rest of the clots was removed through flush using catheter . For 1 and half month catheter was inserted. However he was recovering now but today (07.05.12) my father called me and said that today again he saw blood in his urine and also he is not feeling well. Sir I would like to know what might be the cause and where to get a better treatment. (Also I would like to state that doctor did not operated the prostate at that time only removed the blood clot) Thanking you

Fro your description it appears that your father had only blood clots when the surgeon attempted to remove the prostate. I am bewildered by the fact that ,the attending doctor was not aware of this preoperatively. Or the other possibility could be he started the operation but it started bleeding torrentially and so the procedure was abondaned. Now it has to be determined that whether it is a malignancy which is causing bleeding or is it severe infection which is causing bleeding or is it a baldder tumor. The best investigation now would be to get a coagulation profile done. This should be followed by a double contrast Ct scan of the KUB region inclufding the pelvis. This will only unable one to find the exact cause at this moment of time.

hi, most common cause of bleeding in urine is enlarged prostate gland, once urine infection and stone disease are ruled out. It is important to evaluate any case of blood in urine as cancer of bladder or prostate can also be a cause. In your father's case, Cystoscopy and clot removal were done so we assume that after clot removal, the doctor had re-checked the bladder to see for any bladder tumor and it was not present. Repeated blood in urine becomes one of the indications for surgery for prostate gland. during surgery, enlarged portion of gland will be removed endoscopically and sent for biopsy. further treatment depends on biopsy report (benign or cancerous). get a urologist consult. good luck.
