Raynaud's Syndrome Was Treated With Hydromorphone And Propranolol For Restlessness. Why Is She Weak And In Immense Pain?
I am hoping to get some advice regarding my Mom's current situation. She was previously diagnosed with Reynaud's syndrome ..I think about 3 years ago. Her pain was mainly in her hands and was treated with pain medication (hydromorphone). Recently she was admitted to the hospital (Sept) for a bladder infection.) She is 87 years old and spent 4 week in the hospital. She really became worse while in there ...the bladder infection cleared, but they had prescribed propranolol for her restlessness. Since then she has been moved into a nursing home and her pain and restlessness has become extreme. She has trouble sleeping, is very restless and has episodes of uncontrollable shaking. At these times she complains of pain in her hands, ankles and knees and that feeling of just not being able to rest. She cannot sit in one place for more than a few minutes. She needs to stand up and many times she says she has a feeling of needing to run..of course she can't run but that's the feeling she gets and because she is weak, she has a hard time walking but she has a feeling of needing to walk as well. We have been reading about propranolol and wonder if this drug is actually doing the opposite of what she needs .We are desparate for another opinion as none of the doctors seem to have a resolution. She is in pain and suffering. Please offer some advice.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us. The immense pain is usually associated with Raynaud's syndrome. This needs a surgical treatment for proper relief. Taking only propranolol will help for short term only. I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. Regards, Dr. Praveen Tayal , drtayal72@gmail.com
