Reasons For Sore Knees On Sides And Front Along With Swelling After A Accident ?

Hi, I was in a bad car accident and right away my knees felt sore on the sides and in front. The one knee proceeded to swell and bruise badly. The swelling has gone down alittle bit but from the inside of my knee to about the middle of my knee cap it is very tight and almost feels kinda squishy , if that makes sense. I can t bend my knee all the way, like I used to, and it hurts all the way down the front of my shin and into my ankle. The coloring is kind of yellowish down my leg and in different areas. It also feels very warm in my knee area and sometimes my lower leg. The inside of my ankle is also very bruised. They took an x-ray of my knee in the er but said nothing was broken. I was walking on it quite a bit right after the accident even though it was very sore. I ve been trying to stay off of it for the last few days but it doesn t seem to be improving. Any ideas?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
The large bruise is likely to be due to a hematoma formation in the area.
Since the bony injuries have been ruled out, a soft tissue injury is likely. You need to avoid massaging the area and take a mild pain killer for relief. Avoid sitting for long hours. Do a cold compress on the area of injury.
The pain and swelling might take over a week to subside. In case there is an acute pain and a sudden increase in swelling then consult your physician for a direct examination to rule out any infection in the area.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
