Hi! welcome to HCM! Multinodular goiters can be either toxic making too much thyroid hormone causing hyperthyroidism or non-toxic .Most multinodular goiters do not cause symptoms . Patients with a toxic multinodular goiter may have signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism. If the goiter is large enough, patients may have compressive symptoms that can include difficulty breathing or swallowing. A thorough history and physical exam should be performed AND a thyroid ultrasound (USG) should be done. The appropriate treatment of a multinodular goiter depends on the size, how fast it is growing, the FNAB results, risk of cancer, if there are compressive symptoms as in your case, it should be removed by thyroidectomy.
