Recommended Total Removal Of Thyroid Due To Multinodular Goiters. Should I Consult Endocrinologist?

My ENT is recommending total removal of my thyroid due to multinodular goiters. Should I consult an Endocrinologist prior to scheduling the thyroid removal to determine thyroid function and or discuss whether there is any other alternative treatment? The nodules are nearing 3.5 cm, are visible, and are starting to affect swallow.

Hi!
welcome to HCM!
Multinodular goiters can be either toxic making too much thyroid hormone causing hyperthyroidism or non-toxic .Most multinodular goiters do not cause symptoms . Patients with a toxic multinodular goiter may have signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
If the goiter is large enough, patients may have compressive symptoms that can include difficulty breathing or swallowing.
A thorough history and physical exam should be performed AND a thyroid ultrasound (USG) should be done.
The appropriate treatment of a multinodular goiter depends on the size, how fast it is growing, the FNAB results, risk of cancer, if there are compressive symptoms as in your case, it should be removed by thyroidectomy.
You can consult an endocrinologist for evaluation of your thyroid function.
Take care!
