Severe Constipation After Stopping Omeprazole For Gastric Ulcer. Any Suggestions?

I took the generic form of prilosec (omeprazole) for one month to treat what was suspected to be a gastric ulcer. I stopped taking the medication at least 4 or 5 weeks ago. Since that time (both on and off the medication), I have experienced severe constipation. What is the best way to address this issue?

Hi

With regards to your constipation I would advise changing your lifestyle Like:
1. using plenty of water ( 2-3 L per day)
2. avoid spicy foods ( this will help for your ulcer too)
3. using foods reached in fibers
4. increase your physical activity ( walking, swimming, running)
5. use fiber packets
6. use lactulose

With regards to omeprazole usage, constipation is a rare side effect of him.

If I were you treating doctor firstly I would advice to perform upper endoscopy and than using omeprazole.
If it is not enough please consult gastroenterologist for further evaluations.

wishing you health
