Severe Dandruff. Taking Medicated Shampoo, Topical Medication, Condition Improved, Worsened. Safe Remedy?

I have really bad dandruff. I saw a dermatologist and he prescribed a medicated shampoo as well as a topical medication for 2 weeks. After the regimen, one week passed and the dandruff came right back. I still continued to use the medicated shampoo about every 2 washes though. What can I do to get rid of my dandruff once and for all?
